Kids in Washington DC Are Learning Leadership Through Community Service: Underworld BJJ kids lead H St Cleanup event

At Underworld BJJ, we believe martial arts is about much more than takedowns, submissions, and physical fitness.

Every month, our Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) program focuses on a character development theme that helps students become stronger leaders, better teammates, and more engaged members of their community.

This month's theme was simple, but incredibly powerful: Kindness.

To bring that lesson to life, more than 30 local children from our DC martial arts community joined friends, families, neighbors, and local leaders for a community cleanup event along the H Street NE corridor and surrounding neighborhoods.

Together, the group filled over a dozen large, 50 gallon trash bags, helping make one of DC's most vibrant neighborhoods cleaner, safer, and more welcoming for everyone.

Teaching Community Leadership Through Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

When most people think about BJJ, they think about self defense, confidence, and physical fitness. While those benefits are incredibly important, one of our primary goals at Underworld is helping children develop strong character and leadership skills that extend beyond the mats.

Community service projects give our students the opportunity to practice values like:

  • Kindness

  • Responsibility

  • Leadership

  • Teamwork

  • Respect

  • Civic engagement

  • Community pride

Rather than simply talking about kindness during class, our students had the opportunity to demonstrate it through meaningful action. By working together to improve their neighborhood, they learned that even small acts can have a significant impact on the people around them, making it both a fun and impactful kids' activity in Washington DC.

More Than Martial Arts: Building Better Citizens

The cleanup brought together families from across DC and highlighted those who are local neighbors, creating an opportunity for children to see firsthand what community involvement looks like.

Students worked side-by-side with parents, siblings, neighbors, and local leaders while collecting litter throughout the H Street NE area.

The event served as a reminder that creating positive change does not require grand gestures. It often starts with people who care enough to show up and help.

For many of the children involved, this was their first experience participating in a community service project, and we were honored to have support from several members of the local community.

Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Kym Butler-Spires joined the cleanup effort, demonstrating the importance of community partnerships and civic engagement, while members of the Metropolitan Police Department also stopped by to support the event and connect with participating families.

These interactions help children understand that improving a neighborhood is a collaborative effort that brings together residents, local government, community organizations, and public safety professionals.

Kids Activities in Washington, DC That Make a Difference

Families are often searching for meaningful extracurricular activities that help children grow physically, mentally, and socially.

At Underworld BJJ, we strive to provide all three.

Our youth Brazilian jiu jitsu programs help children develop:

  • Confidence

  • Resilience

  • Focus and discipline

  • Emotional regulation

  • Physical fitness

  • Problem-solving abilities

  • Leadership and character

  • Self defense skills

Community events like our H Street NE cleanup allow students to put those lessons into practice outside the gym.

We want our students to become not only skilled martial artists but also engaged citizens who care about the people and neighborhoods around them.

Thank You to Our Amazing Community!!

We are incredibly grateful to every child, parent, family member, neighbor, volunteer, and community leader who participated in this cleanup effort.

The success of the event was a direct reflection of the generosity and spirit of the H Street community.

Most importantly, we are proud of our students for demonstrating what kindness looks like in action. The lesson of the month may have been kindness, but the impact will last much longer than that.
